SMART Team serves impoverished Milwaukee neighborhood
SMART Physician Recruiting spent time as a complete company team serving at the Riverwest Food Pantry in an impoverished neighborhood on Milwaukee, WI Northside. SMART has been a financial provider for over six years of the Pantry and it’s 12,000 people that it serves each year at two locations. The SMART team used it’s staff development and team building day to learn about how the Food Pantry (www.riverwestfoodpantry.org) is helping improve and change lives within the 12 block radius that the pantry and community development center serve in Milwaukee on a daily basis.
Topics discussed by Vincent Noth, Executive Director of the Riverwest Food Pantry included discussion on racial inequality in Milwaukee city neighborhoods compared to affluent suburbs that surround Milwaukee, health food scarcity in the inner city (access to quality foods, ie produce and non-processed foods). SMART team members spent the late afternoon and early evening assisting the shoppers collect the food they desperately need to feed themselves and their families. Most importantly, SMART team members connected with the clients of Pantry and encouraged them to continue to be apart of the community where they live.
Poverty and food scarcity is real, especially in Milwaukee. Thanks to Vincent Noth for allowing us to work and volunteer with his amazing staff and thanks to those who are volunteers on a daily basis with the Riverwest Food Pantry. I encourage everyone to consider supporting this cause or a local cause near your community.
